Birds

8 07 2008

Suddenly I started liking birds. I really like them now and can’t quite explain why. If they are small I get stumbled with their perfection, their graciousness, their capacity to dare and to stare in front a huge me. If they are colored or shinny I wonder if nature could be more perfect. But I like them especially if they are black. House martins may be my favorite species for small birds, now that I think of it. European house martins migrate to Africa in the winter. I wonder where these small creatures and their whole families get the strength to embrace this long lasting migratory journey towards a distant place. Honestly I cannot believe that their only reason lies in the fact that in Africa the air is still warm and the sun keeps on shining. They also know that due to cold and rain there will be not enough food for them in the winter if they stay at home. But I think they are mostly getting fun from these joint traveling. They’re taking some time off. Family nests are left unoccupied until they come back home and eventually when they do come back to their homeland in the spring they will choose the same nest from previous years, unless it is already occupied. If so, the homeless martin goes on with life and builds a brand new place to live and to breed. Maybe the renewal of an abandoned place will do as well for them. After providing a place to live during the summer they can finally sit to nurture a full hand of little martins that in the end will join their parents in their first trip to Africa. Martins are really beautiful and anatomically perfect. One of these days I had a few singing in my verandah. In fact there was a considerable queue of 8 or 10 of them and they seemed so happy although they know it will only last a few months. Aren’t these birds just great? I like birds. I like thought little birds. I do not like chickens.
